Polar Express party

Day 15
Today Zaida had a Polar Express PJ Party at preschool. They sang us some songs & they even had a special visitor.

I'm a little sad, because I think we really only have a couple of good years of Santa left in us (if that). Zaida was talking to my dad yesterday and said, "Did you know that there are 2 Santas that live in my town?!" Again, I'm a little sad that Z is starting to figure it out already.

And, Maui gave the little guy something new to think about - candy canes. Yum!

Mele Kalikimaka

Day 14

Today was nothing super exciting. Just a Hawaiian-ish teriyaki chicken dinner and I even made a pineapple cobbler. Not my favorite, but it was okay. The past couple of years I have made the yummiest dessert, but I only had canned pineapple. If you have extra ambition, time & calorie allowance you should definitely try it.

Roasted Pineapple with Malibu Rum and Cloves

I saw this on Take Home Chef - if you want the recipe email me and I will send it to you. For those of you who don't have rum in you pantry (like me), I have found you can substitute orange juice. Anyway, it's delish!

Nativity

Day 13

Zaida is pretty cute with the "A-tivity" or "Nabidity". She will tell the story with a few modifications. Jesus' parents were "Mary and Moses ... I mean, Joses - what? That's what Mary called him." They had Jesus in the "barn" with "a donkey, a bull, and a camible" (real animals are a donkey, cow & camel). And the 3 wise men brought the baby Jesus gifts of gold, "frankenstein-scense" and myrrh.

2 Turtle Doves

Day 12

Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory for some chocolate turtles ... or chocolate suckers or chocolate covered oreos ... ... or just some sweet little boy smiles.

Puzzle Night

Day 11

We've done this a couple of years now. I love puzzles. Zaida wants to help so much. The pieces are quite small so it is a little difficult for her to really do much, but she sure tries. Look at this determination.

The Christmas Carol

Day 10

Busy Day --- Zaida and Dad went outside to put out the outside decorations. Zaida decided that it was the perfect time for a picnic. Cute!

Then Zaida finished her "Happy Home-runner" game. This is a game I made up that helps Zaida move around a game board by doing basic chores and when she makes it around to home plate she gets a treat/toy/do something special. She said she wanted to go swimming. We talked her into trying ice skating.

We love our cute little city. Directly across the little street from our neighborhood is the library and city hall area. They turn the water fountain into a cute little ice skating rink in the winter.

After skating I asked her how she did - she responded begrudgingly, "Not good. But, Daddy did it perfect." She is so competitive - I wonder where she got that from?!

Tonight we went to the Hale Center Theater and saw "The Christmas Carol".

They don't allow kids under the age of 5. So, we left Robson with Maui, Papi & Quinney - and we took Zaida with us. Angela got us some tickets, so we got to sit next to her, Seth & Alex. I was a little nervous that Zaida wouldn't like it. But, she did great! After the play Zaida asked me if we could see it again. I said that maybe we could go again next year. She said she didn't want to go next year, she wanted to see it again now. So, I think she enjoyed it. Or maybe it was all the cookies & candy we ate. The funny part was I asked her what her favorite part was and she told me the song "Link by Link" - which wasn't even in the play, but the TV movie version.

9 Ladies Leaping

Day 9I think this should actually say "(Day) 9 - Lizards Leaping". Zaida belongs to the 4 year old dance class at the "Leaping Lizards Dance Studio". She had her end of year recital tonight & she did pretty good. She remembered most of her dance. My favorite part of the night was during the finale'. Zaida and her class joined all of the other girls on the stage. They were supposed to walk out, bow and then say "Merry Christmas". As predicted, none of them remembered and they ended up just walking around and talking to each other. But, then Zaida noticed the crowd ... and she kissed her hand, blew it out to the crowd & then waved. She looked like a little rock star playing to the crowd. She is hilarious. And amazing. I am seriously proud of her.

Afterward, we asked her about her performance she said that she wasn't scared. She liked dancing in front of all those people. I asked her if she got nervous and/or got butterflies in her tummy before she went out. She said no, but she did have to go potty. :)

Rapping & Wrapping

Day 8

I have about 6 little videos of Zaida playing her guitar and singing. They are so cute.

Zaida helped me cut & tie the ribbons while I wrapped up a lot of our Christmas gifts.

I think they look pretty cute. I love wrapping presents.

Rudolph's friends

Day 7

Today we went to go say "hi" to our furry antlered friends.

We stopped before we hit dance lessons, hence the ballet get-up.

Zaida initally didn't want to get out of the car. I thought it was because it was cold, but it was because she didn't want to get a picture taken.

I love this picture. Look at Robson ... he is either pointing out the "reindeer" or he is saying he is #1.Zaida and I were talking about the "reindeer" and I was commenting on how big they were. I asked Zaida how big she thought they were and her response, "Thirteen ... or ... yeah, fourteen. Cause that's bigger than thirteen."

Elf

Day 6

Today we had a special visitor come to our house. Her name is Rizella the Elf.
I asked if Santa flew over on his sleigh & left it for her, but Zaida said that the box was magic. If you haven't seen these ("Elf on the Shelf") here is what it is. They are little elfs that magically go to Santa at the North Pole each night to report on if you are bad or good. Then they come back each night - sometimes in a different place in your home, so you have to find where they landed. Santa instructed the elves not to speak to us - and if we touch them we might wear off their magic, so we shouldn't play with them.

Here is what Zaida has to say about our new house guest: "Okay, I was looking at the Elf. And then I heared when you were gone it disappeared and magic coming out. And I heared the elf's magic and the elf and Daddy didn't saw it and I sawed her disappear. And then she was over by the tree and she disappeared to Santa and then she came back onto the tree."

Japanese celebration

Day 5
Today we had our Nihongo celebration. Even though there is not really a Christmas celebration we try to include the Japanese celebration. Quinn told us that the Japanese will bake a white cake. But, that's about it. I try to be pretty on top of things, but since we just had ice cream cake last night I don't think I am up for making another cake. 2 cakes in 2 days ... I mean, I am all for pigging out at the holidays, but there has to be some restraint, right?

So, I just made shrimp fried rice & wontons (maybe I should have made them gyoza, instead). Well, regardless it was pretty tasty.

My favorite eskimos

Day 4

This was our Eskimo celebration. Aside from eating whale blubber I can't really figure out what to do for this little holiday tradition. Last year I made an igloo ice cream cake. I was less ambitious this year, but we still stuck with the ice cream cake idea. And, as always, we had our favorite Eskimo with us - my Dad.

And, Papi's buddy - the little Eskimo, Robson.

Feliz Natal

Day 3

Today was our Brazilian Christmas day ... Feliz Natal! We went to Braza Grill (yum), Corey drank some of his fave drink from his mission (Guarana) and taught Zaida some Portuguese (obrigada - thank you) and ate some Dolce de leche ice cream for dessert (yum, again!). And, just so Robson isn't left out - we named him a Brazilian name. :)

Everyday stuff --- Zaida "reading" his book to him and helping Robson feel the tigers soft tail.

And, last night Robson decided he was really not happy with his limited diet. So, we tried Sweet Potatoes. Zaida is seriously such a good little helper. She really wanted to feed Robson. And he loved it too. I have the best kids.

Froeliche Weihnachten

Day 2
We had to shake it up this year. Normally we do this the first day of December, but since we could only hit the festival on the first we had to push it back a day. Today is our German themed day - hence, the title "Merry Christmas" in German.

I introduced the idea of the advent to Zaida (again), and explained our drawers and then we ate chocolate - Toblerones, to be exact.

I also hid the Christmas pickle. On the jar it says, "In Old World Germany, the last decoration placed on the Christmas Tree was always a pickle ... carefully hidden deep in the boughs. Legend has it that the observant child who found it on Christmas Day was blessed with a year of good fortune ... and a special gift."

On an everyday note, Robson found some new fun toys. If any of you have held Robson you know that he is a hair-puller. So, the other day he found that he really loves to get tangled up in Zaida's Barbie hair or her My Little Pony hair. Here he is taking out some aggression on poor Barbie. I think she still has a headache.

Christmas "Advent"-ure 2011

Day 1

Today has been a little bit of a crazy day. Zaida had school, but then we kicked off our

"Advent"-turous December at the Festival of Trees. First stop - Santa!

One of our favorites - Snoopy!

Most of the festival gang ... Robson is sound asleep. In fact, he looked a little like the wicked santa of the west - you could only see his little feet poking out of his stroller.

Then, after the festival we headed back to the Degns to feast on our Boeuf Bourguignon. Not totally sure if it was worth the all day preparation - or the anti-anxiety meds I had to take to get it done. But, it was delish!

4 months old now

I had a doctors appointment the other day - all went well except those stinking shots. As usual, Mom cried almost as much as me. I am weighing in at 16 pounds now! Which means I am 70% awesomer than the other boys my age. :)

I'm really loving my stuffed animals lately - especially my puppy.

And, I had my first bite of rice cereal today. It was okay until that last bite I tried to gag down.

Most of all I am diggin' this big sister of mine. She is pretty silly and she loves to spend time with me ... even if it is in my bed. And, well, she loves me. What else can I say?!
